Valence - the position that the phrase occupies within a dichotomous* general class of meaning i.e., a general ( semi-abstract) characteristic and its opposite: happy vs sad; good vs bad; pretty vs ugly; disturbed vs peaceful; pleasant vs unpleasant; evil vs virtuous; technical vs everyday; professional vs neutral vs insult, etc.

C. Idea - short interpretation of phrase, e.g., " resting quietly" = sleeping calmly/peaceful, usually after some sort of discomfort; " work in the garden" = active action, physical activity or labor, not sitting around doing nothing; " abandoned by their parents" = left by people who protect you, left alone when you shouldn't be, forgotten about.

D. Connotation of phrase - Write short phrase that describes the connotation. Remember to think about the abstract idea that comes from the concrete action or emotion described.

Keep these four ideas in your mind as you do the next step.

3. Re-read the complete example sentence (s)

A. This time paying attention to the words that are not underlined, especially from the beginning of the sentence, e.g., " The doctor gave her"; " Whatever he spoke of her"; " the thief... The police" and think of what they mean.

B. Since the exercise has a selection of possible answer, you can then read these two narrow down the possibilities. If two possible answers appear related to the sentence see which one of them is supported by the most phrases. However, remember that when you are reading text you will not have these had to help you.

* Dichotomous: something divided into two opposite ideas, e.g., temperature = hot versus cold. Attitude = negative versus positive, or nasty versus polite; intelligence = dump versus smart, low IQ versus high IQ; social manner = rude versus polite; looks = unattractive versus beautiful, ugly versus gorgeous.

Verbalization: saying aloud or to yourself, cues, items on a list, or steps of a task.

- Saying things out loud can help you process information correctly and make it "stick" so you can remember it accurately later on.

Chunking: grouping information into meaningful chunk.

- Grouping like items together can help you make association between them so that if you remember one item, you're more likely to remember the other too.

Rehearsal: repeat information or steps of a task over and over again to gain mastey.

- Helps with memory, helps to stay focused on relevant information, practice make perfect.

Mnemonic: make up a word, sentence, or story where each letter or component stands for an item in a series.

- Helps simplify a lot of information and make that information more memorable.

Information Reduction: when confronted with a large amount of information, cover up some of the material.

- Helps with focus on important information, reduces overload.

Verbalization: say items or steps out loud.

- Saying things out loud can help you focus on every detail so you don't miss anything.

Point or Touch: use your finger, pencil, or mouse to point to information you are reading.

- Highlights specific information to increase focus.

Sensory Reduction: block out auditory or visual distractors that are not task-related.

- Use headphones to listen to important information and block out distractors.

- Sit away from visual distractors ( hallway, window )

Break for Attention: take brief breaks to reduce fatigue.

- Helps sustain attention over time.

Take Notes: write down notes while listening or reading to stay focused on the task.

- Staying active during tasks keeps your mind from drifting.

Proper Noun- A specific person, place, thing.

Ed- Ending for pass tense.

Regular Verb- Has a patten (rules).

Irregular Verb- Doesn't follow the patten (rules).

Past Continuous Tense- On going action that already happened.
